News - Public Indemnity Insurance

It has come to the attention of the committee, while organising finals night that we may be liable for any accidents that may happen in and around the Pontesbury Darts and Domino season.

While organising the hire of Minsterley Village Hall for last years finals night the Halls Mangaement Committee asked the Pontesbury Darts and Domino Committee to sign a form making us liable for any damages during the night. Having not been asked to do this for previous finals nights, it came to us as a bit of a surprise.

Having agreed to be liable we then had to take out our own Public Liability Insurance for the night which came to approximately £60.00 giving us £1 million worth of cover.

We then took advice from two firms of solicitors, The BDO and Darts World Magazine (The leading Darts Magazine in the world). The answer came back the same.

If anybody organising an event, that person or people should have Public Indeminity Insurance. Given this that means that if somebody has an accident in a pub where the committee has arranged for a league match to be played, The committee, in theory, could be sued jointly or individually.

In the "Litigation Climate" that we all live in the committee has decided that we should take out Public Liability Insurance for the next year.

Somebody said to me when discussing this " It will kill the league". I believe that if we don't have this cover eventually that will kill the league.

We are looking at an additional fee of approximately £25.00 per team.

Personally, I think it's the world gone mad, but if it is not agreed at the AGM that the league takes out Public Liabilty Insurance I will have to resign and let sombody else take the responsibility.

Example (1): THE WORLD GOING MAD

A man brought himself Motor Home, driving down the road on his way for a holiday he fancied a cup of coffee.

He placed the vehicle in cruise control (thinking that the vehicle would drive itself) and went to make himself a nice cuppa. Obviously the vehicle crashed causing the man serious injury and writng off the vehicle.

He successfully sued the vehicle company for not given proper instructions on exactly what was meant by CRUISE CONTROL.
